Instructors


Retired Captain Jim Barrett is an expert in the sensory training of horses. In his 25 years of involvement he has been a trainer, supervisor, and the manager of one of the most successful units in Southern California.

Jim is one of the founding board members of the California Mounted Officers Association (CMOA) a statewide organization dedicated to the betterment of the mounted officer. He was both president and training coordinator for CMOA. He is also a certified Richard Shrake instructor/trainer.

Retired Deputy Wendall Hildebrandt is one of the co-instructors for this class.

He has over 30 years experience with horses to include 21 years training police horses. Wendall attended California's first mounted officers state academy.

Wendall is a certified horse appraiser and likes to spend the off season making leather goods.

Jan Bryant has spent over 50 years of her life riding horses.

Since 1980 she has instructed in both Dressage and basic jumping.

Jan has trained with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

Along with her team mates, Jan rode her horse, Duke, to a first place finish in the 2000 California Mounted Officers Association Trail Trials.

Maura "Mo" Parga is a San Diego Police Robbery Detective, with 19 years on the department. She is also the current Chula Vista Police Mounted Volunteer and Unit Trainer. She is a P.O.S.T. certified instructor, teaching at the Sacramento Sheriff's Department basic and advanced course. Mo is also the former president of the California Mounted Officers Association.
